Step 4:  Once all the peanut butter balls have been done, place the baking sheet in the refrigerator for about an hour to firm up.

Tip:  if you don't want to roll the peanut balls in chocolate, you could stop here.  They are delicious as a treat just this way.

Step 5:  While the peanut balls are in the refrigerator, melt the chocolate.

How do you dip chocolate balls?

  • Put the chocolate in a heat-safe bowl and put in the microwave for 30-second intervals until the chocolate is almost melted.  Then stir as the chocolate completely melts.
  • Another way to melt the chocolate is to use the double boiler method.  Using a heat-proof bowl (I usually use a glass bowl), and place this over a saucepan that has simmering hot water.  Make sure the bowl fits into the saucepan.
  • Put the peanut butter ball on a fork and lower it into the melted chocolate mixture.
  • Working quickly, coat the peanut butter ball and then lift it out of the chocolate mixture, shake the excess chocolate off and place it on the wax paper-lined baking sheet.

Step 6:  Place the chocolate covered peanut butter balls on a wax paper-lined baking sheet.

Step 7:  Once all the balls have been coated, place the baking sheet into the refrigerator so the chocolate can harden.  Once they harden, the peanut butter balls are ready to consume!

Store in an airtight container in the refrigerator or freezer.

Recipe Tips:

  • Use creamy peanut butter.  I use natural peanut butter with peanuts as the ingredients and no extra ingredients like oils, sugars, stabilizers, etc...
  • Substitute chocolate chips or other chocolate instead of a dark chocolate bar.
  • Substitute white chocolate chips for dark chocolate for white chocolate coating.
  • Use almond butter or other nut butter instead of peanut butter.
  • Enjoy the peanut butter balls with no topping.   They are great plain!
  • Sprinkle newly created chocolate balls with salt flakes or sprinkles.
  • Substitute honey for maple syrup.
  • Add mini-chocolate chips to the peanut butter mixture before rolling into balls.

How long will peanut butter balls last in the refrigerator?

  • Store peanut butter balls in an airtight container in the refrigerator for up to a week.
  • Store peanut balls in an airtight container in the freezer for up to 3 months.
