How to cut a mango – and several ways to scoop the flesh out!  Mangoes are delicious fruit available readily in grocery stores and are used in a variety of recipes.

I particularly love them in smoothies!  They are refreshingly naturally sweet but can be a little intimidating at first to cut and serve.

Use this step by step guide to successfully cut a mango.

    Two mangoes on the counter.

    How to choose a mango?

    • You’ll want to start with ripe mango.
    • If you buy a hard mango, let it sit for a few days until it softens up.  Ripe mangoes usually have a pleasant fruity scent.  An overripe mango will be very squishy.

    How to cut a mango:

Important to know:  A mango has a pit in the center. It’s hard to see as it’s the same color as the mango flesh, but it’s there.  You’ll feel it if you try to cut into it.

Step 1:  Wash and dry the mango.

Step 2:  Using a sharp knife, hold the mango straight up and cut one side off. See the photos below.

Step 3:  Repeat by cutting the other side off.

Step 4:  Then cut the shorter other two sides off as shown in photos.

Step 5:  To scoop the mango out, you can use a small glass and slide it under the mango flesh and scoop it.  You’ll see in the photos how the solid piece of mango ends up in the glass.  It’s really easy as the mango was ripe.

How to cut a mango step by step directions.

After you slice off the sides of the mango, one way to retrieve the mango fruit is to cut it in the pattern shown below in the photo.  It’s a criss-cross pattern similar to what you can do with an avocado.  Then you can scoop the mango fruit out and use it.

You can use a glass to scoop the mango flesh out.  See photos below.

The other way to get the mango fruit out of the skins is to cut a criss-cross  Another pattern across the mango flesh (see below) and then scoop it out that way.

Another easy way to get the mango out of the skin is to use a spoon.  If the mango is ripe, it should come right out.  You’ll find the method that is easiest for you.

    Tips:

    • You can also use a tool called a mango splitter to cut a mango.
    • Store your mango fruit in the refrigerator in an airtight container for up to a few days.  It’s best consumed fresh and right away.
