Dragon fruit, also known as pitaya, and strawberry pear is a tropical fruit native to Central America and South America with a vibrant color, either bright pink flesh or white flesh.  It is an exotic fruit and there are different varieties.

  • Red dragon fruit
  • White dragon fruit
  • Yellow dragon fruit (yellow skin)

Dragon fruit can be found in the frozen section of your grocery store (dragon fruit puree) or the fresh fruit section (fresh pitaya).

This pitaya smoothie is a delicious tropical smoothie with tropical flavors, simple ingredients, and a bright magenta color but still has a mild taste.  Add fresh fruit or frozen fruit and enjoy the creamy texture. It is easily found in the frozen section of grocery stores.

For a green smoothie, try the Anti-Inflammatory Smoothie.

Ingredients:

  • Dragon Fruit - use fresh or frozen, this is a pink dragon fruit smoothie
  • Mango - this is another tropical fruit to add sweetness to this smoothie
  • Strawberries - berries are a delicious fruit full of antioxidants and a colorful fruit
  • Chia Seed - are tiny black seeds, a great addition and a great way to add protein to smoothies
  • Milk - for a creamy texture to this smoothie. Use your favorite milk. For plant-based milk, try oat milk, coconut milk, or almond milk.
  • Banana - ripe bananas add a natural sweetness and contribute to this smoothie's creaminess.

How To Make A Dragon Fruit Smoothie:

Step 1 - Gather and measure the ingredients for this easy smoothie recipe.

Step 2- Add all the ingredients to a blender cup (high-speed or cup, bullet blender) and blend for a minute or two until the mixture is creamy and smooth with a gorgeous color.

Enjoy in a smoothie bowl or pour into a glass and drink. The first time you make this homemade smoothie you may want to adjust the ingredients a bit to your taste.

See smoothie and smoothie bowl tips further down the post (below).

Once blended, the smoothie turns this amazing Fuschia color!  I prefer a high-speed blender for this dragon fruit smoothie recipe.

How Do You Make A Dragon Fruit Smoothie Bowl/Breakfast Smoothie?

  1. Make the dragon fruit smoothie, but make sure it is thick (ice cream texture).
  2. Pour into a bowl.
  3. Add toppings like fresh berries, shredded coconut, chopped nuts, chia seeds, cacao nibs, hemp seeds, etc...

Can you freeze dragon fruit?  Yes, see below in the post for directions.

Smoothie bowls are simple and delicious!

Tips and Substitutions:

  • Dragon fruit smoothie with almond milk; you could substitute another non-dairy milk or water or coconut water.
  • Dragon fruit smoothie packs are convenient and found in the frozen section of most grocery stores.  You could use frozen dragon fruit chunks or fresh dragon fruit cut in chunks in this smoothie.
  • If the smoothie is too thick, add a bit more liquid (water or dairy-free milk).  If the smoothie is too thin, add more frozen fruits or ice cubes.
  • Do not leave out the creamy banana as it adds flavor, texture, and sweetness.
  • Use frozen banana
  • Swap out the fruits used for what you have on hand.  (E.g. Pineapple for mango, orange for strawberry, blueberries, etc..).
  • For best results, store the leftover smoothie in an airtight container in the refrigerator for up to a day or two.
  • Can you freeze dragon fruit?  Yes, see the instructions below.

Optional Add-ins:

  • Hemp hearts - add protein and healthy fats
  • Pineapple juice - to add sweetness and additional tropical flavor
  • A scoop of peanut butter for protein
  • Coconut meat or flakes for healthy fats and tropical flavor
  • Scoop of protein powder for additional vitamins and protein
  • Throw in some fresh or frozen spinach for added veggies.
  • Add some honey, maple syrup, or orange juice,  if the smoothie is not sweet enough for you.

Health Benefits of Dragon Fruit/Pitaya:

  • Excellent source of vitamin c
  • Good amount of fiber and antioxidants
  • Antioxidants that benefit the immune system
  • Can be an easy healthy breakfast

How to Freeze Dragon Fruit:

  • Peel, slice, cut into chunks a fresh dragon fruit, place on a parchment lined (or wax paper lined baking sheet), and place in the freezer until frozen. Transfer to an airtight container and place in the freezer.

How to Store Dragon Fruit:

  • Like other fresh fruits, you can store fresh dragon fruit at room temperature for a few days (2-3), or in the refrigerator for 1-2 weeks. I usually put all refrigerated fruits and vegetables in airtight containers.

I hope you love this easy pink smoothie!
