Recipe Notes

Tips and Substitutions:

  • Dragon fruit smoothie with almond milk; you could substitute another non-dairy milk or water or coconut water.
  • Dragon fruit smoothie packs are convenient and found in the frozen section of most grocery stores.  You could use frozen dragon fruit chunks or fresh dragon fruit cut in chunks in this smoothie.
  • If the smoothie is too thick, add a bit more liquid (water or dairy-free milk).  If the smoothie is too thin, add more frozen fruits or ice cubes.
  • Do not leave out the creamy banana as it adds flavor, texture, and sweetness.
  • Use frozen banana
  • Swap out the fruits used for what you have on hand.  (E.g. Pineapple for mango, orange for strawberry, blueberries, etc..).
  • For best results, store the leftover smoothie in an airtight container in the refrigerator for up to a day or two.
  • Can you freeze dragon fruit?  Yes, see the instructions below.

Optional Add-ins:

  • Hemp hearts - add protein and healthy fats
  • Pineapple juice - to add sweetness and additional tropical flavor
  • A scoop of peanut butter for protein
  • Coconut meat or flakes for healthy fats and tropical flavor
  • Scoop of protein powder for additional vitamins and protein
  • Throw in some fresh or frozen spinach for added veggies.
  • Add some honey, maple syrup, or orange juice,  if the smoothie is not sweet enough for you.

Health Benefits of Dragon Fruit/Pitaya:

  • Excellent source of vitamin c
  • Good amount of fiber and antioxidants
  • Antioxidants that benefit the immune system
  • Can be an easy healthy breakfast

How to Freeze Dragon Fruit:

  • Peel, slice, cut into chunks a fresh dragon fruit, place on a parchment lined (or wax paper lined baking sheet), and place in the freezer until frozen. Transfer to an airtight container and place in the freezer.

How to Store Dragon Fruit:

  • Like other fresh fruits, you can store fresh dragon fruit at room temperature for a few days (2-3), or in the refrigerator for 1-2 weeks. I usually put all refrigerated fruits and vegetables in airtight containers.

How Do You Make A Dragon Fruit Smoothie Bowl:

  1. Make the dragon fruit smoothie, but make sure it is thick (ice cream texture).
  2. Pour into a bowl.
  3. Add toppings like fresh berries, shredded coconut, chopped nuts, chia seeds, cacao nibs, hemp seeds, etc...
  4. Throw in some fresh or frozen spinach for added veggies.
