Recipe Notes

Top tips for making this smoothie:

  • If not using a frozen banana (or don't have time to freeze), add some ice cubes.
  • Add a teaspoon of ground flaxseed to thicken it (it is best to ground them before adding to a smoothie).
  • Substitute applesauce for the apples - about 1/2 cup.
  • Add a pinch of nutmeg
  • Add a teaspoon of honey or maple syrup for a sweeter smoothie.
  • Drizzle with nut butter.
  • Garnish with chopped apples, chopped nuts, a sprinkle of cinnamon.

Types of apples:

I usually use an apple that is in the current season for this smoothie.  You can use any type of apple you'd like.  Below are some apple varieties and descriptions.

  • Honeycrisp - crisp and distinctly sweet, great fall flavor.
  • Fuji - crunchy and super sweet
  • Gala - crisp and sweet
  • Granny Smith - crunchy and tart
  • Red Delicious - crunchy and mildly sweet
  • Golden Delicious - crisp and sweet
